View Full Version : Map Project: Trail Names? Help Please.

I'm getting to a point on the map project that I'd like some help with the names on some of the trails. I'm sure everyone here is far more familiar with the trail names at Reiter, if you can help me identify them that would be a big help.

This isn't the "official" map the other fellows have been working on but I'd be happy to share the GPS data and map files with anyone who's working on the official map (or anyone else for that matter). I just want to make sure the trail names match up so there's no confusion down the road.

Ok, the trail name list so far based on the official map project:

1. Lake Isabel Trail
2a. Powerline Trail (lower)
2b. Powerline Trail (upper)
3.
4.
5. Sac Up Trail
6.
7. Rock Garden
8.
9. Cable Trail
10.
11. Worms Butt Trail*
12.
13.
14.
15. Index Wall Trail

Help With Naming
These are the trails I need help with in terms of naming:

Trail 3 - On the other side of the road from the big rock wall climb. There is a 6 ft rock ledge adjacent to the road on the western end of the trail exactly opposite where the top of the rock wall climb meets the gravel road.

Trail 4 - This is a series of trails, actually, that network through the woods near the main staging area. Is there a name for this area of trails?

Trail 6 - This goes from the middle of the Rock Garden and heads west to meet up with the Powerline Trail. About mid point it T's off with a spur tht cuts down to the Powerline Trail, too. Trail name?

Trail 8 - On the other map this is designated as simply a gravel road. But it's deteriorating and will probably go to "trail status" soon enough. Is there a name for this? It just loops into the woods and back out.

Trail 10 - Similar condition to trail 8. It just loops into the woods from the Powerlie Trail and comes back. Follows a road grade that is deteriorating and getting overgrown on the edges. It is met at the apex of the loop by trail 14.

Trail 12 - An easier trail on the SE edge of the Reiter area. Runs along the edge of a sharp drop off, then cuts back in through the woods. Name?

Trail 13 - This is a short trail that runs under the last transmission tower to the east.

Trail 14 - This cuts in from the gravel road and meets up with trail 10. It run on an old road grade that is deteriorating. At the road end of it there is a big-ish but semi-shallow puddle that splits around a tree.

Rock Wall Climb - Is there an "official" name for this obstacle? It's the little yellow dot at the western end of Trail 3. The thing is about 40 ft tall and a by-pass goes up the left hand side.

* I didn't notice Worms Butt cutting across the Reiter Pond area, the route I was on circumnavigated it and there was fencing and signs saying to keep out of the banks of the pond. Am I missing the actual route?

Inconsistencies / Unfound Trails
Also, I've not found some trails from the official map. (http://reitertrailwatch.org/forum/showthread.php?t=19) Are the following trails actually there and I've missed them or what? Cannot find:

Grumpy's Trail
BYS (near Index Wall trail, what does this stand for?)

The Index Wall Trail on the linked map seems to follow a different route than indicated from my GPS recording. . . on the map it seems to wander up hill at a fairly steep slope before turning downhill again about mid-point in the trail. Where as in reality I think the trail skirts the base of the rise. Comment? My GPS stuff could be off but I don't remember the trail rising that much in that location.

Anything Missing?
And finally, are there any trails that I'm missing? Areas I haven't covered? I think I'm getting close to recording all the trail but I'd like to do one more run out to Reiter (minimum) to make sure. Is there anybody who knows the trails real well?

Trail 3 I have heard refereed to as "Freeride" but I have never run it
Trail 4 network is known as "Weed out the Shit"
Trail 6 is Rhinoland
Trail 8 I think should be classified as a unmaintained gravel road. No name, just access to cable trail and Grumpys
Trail 10 should fall under the "Power Line Trail" group
Trail 12 I have never run and have never heard of it being named...
Trail 13 I thought was a bike trail
Trail 14 could fall under the same group as Trail 12.

Rock wall climb - known to most as "The Rockface"

I have never ran "Worms Butt" but havent really looked for it, I think its run mainly by the whores.

Grumpy's trail runs from the power line trail up to trail 8 on the map, and ties into trail 8 north of the the zig zag shown on the map. From the power line side you can find the entrance right behind the the power tower above the group of little hill climbs.

BYS is a challenging trail, your rig should stay away from it, but you could map it by foot.
BYS stands for "Beat your Shit" or what I have started to call "Bring your Sack"

Your readings for the Index Wall trail are probably more accurate than the other map. If it shows the general direction of the trail it should be fine. There are so many different lines available on the wall trail it would be impossible to show them all on a printed map.

You are missing...

"Tree Trail" - runs from the back of the first parking area to the very north end of the powerline trail system.
"Trail of Doom" - just a loop of the Lake Izzy trail. Hard to find if you dont know what to look for.

Your also missing SOL which is a loop that begins and ends on BYS.

Thanks a bunch guys. . . there are so many little side trails it's hard to get them all on a map so that it's legible.

I'll look for the Tree Trail, Grumpy's, BYS, and SOL next time I'm out. Even if I have to walk them I still want to get them mapped. Plus it looks like there are some side trails off Lake Isabel trail that I'd like to check out next time, too. Some mid-way up and some that go between the gravel puddle road and the powerlines.

So, BYS heads off of the Wall trail? According to the "official" map it looks like it should start just after the Deer Creek crossing and tie back into the Wall trail somewhere after all the water. But as often as I've run the Wall trail i've not noticed it.

Any clues on finding any of the trailheads would be great. I think I can get Grumpy's . . . I just need to stick to the tree line and locate that one tower.

FYI, Freeride (#3) is ok. The tough part is on the western end getting around the rock ledge. If you can't climb up the rock ledge you have to go up the side route. . . if you have to do that then you're side-hilling on the top of the rock ledge with some gravel and other loose material there. I made it just barely when I ran it east-to-west but it was a bit touchy. The guy following me we had to rig up 2 winchs. . . one to keep him from sliding off the ledge, the other to pull him forward.

Nice job on the data collection. That's shaping up to be a very complete map.

BYS starts at the edge of the tank trap on the way to the wall (left at the Y, left and up to the trail). It ends near the rock face a few hundred feet on the other side of the tank trap, dumping you back out on the road to the wall.

hows this coming along?

Um. . . no new development yet.

With the holidays I haven't had the chance to get back for more mapping. And with a major home project coming up it might be March before I find time to get back there. I might squeeze in a day-run one weekend in January but judging from the other trails yet to be mapped I'm not sure that I could get it all done with just one day.

So, it's an on-going project waiting for me to get myself back up there.

AArrgh, and I'd love to check out the Lake Isabel trail to see what the stroms have wrought but that'll have to wait until I'm done with the mapping.

Must . . . stay . . . focused.

I can head up to Reiter both on the 5th (which is tomorrow) and on the 12th, which is next saturday if any one who knows Reiter wants to help me by being my trail guide that would be great.

As for tomorrow. . . . I know, it's REAL last minute but if anyone wants to head up I'm going to try to be at the lower gravel parking lot by 8:45am. Feel free to give me a call (425-577-1410).

My Jeep is YELLOW so it's really hard to miss.
